ADHD Coaching Serving Adults, Teens, Kids, & Couples

ADHD Help: Coaching vs. Cognitive Therapy

How is ADHD coaching different than therapy? That’s a question, I’ve be asked since I started my coaching practice 20 years ago.

Having been trained and certified, I realized the difficulty in explaining the differences. Surely, they overlap so how does one tell them apart? And which is the best way for someone to achieve ADHD help.

To answer this question, I have accumulated a lot of experience to identify the differences and where the overlap is. In a perfect world, those with ADHD would seek help from both. Please note, this is my opinion based on working with ADHD clients over the past few decades. There is, of course, many ways to interpret the differences.

The ADHD Coaching Approach

  • Solution-based
  • Future-focused
  • Action-oriented
  • Strategy-centered
  • Outcome-aligned
  • Question directed
  • Results driven

Therapy Approach

  • Targets emotional conditions
  • Shines a light on past experiences
  • Allows insights to unfold over time
  • Guides patient’s changing perspectives
  • Offers a psychological sense of wellness
  • Provides a good listener with supportive feedback
  • Drives change by processes

How Coaching and Therapy Work Together

Both professional practices are important to our wellbeing. It’s important to note the differences, so you know what to expect with both kinds of care.  If you do both, you’ll create a holistic approach that offers quicker solutions.

Finding ADHD help can seem like looking for that magical needle in the haystack. However, we know more right now than we ever have about ADHD, including the fact that it’s a biological and behavioral condition.
