Your Brain is Amazing! Treat it Right

Your brain is amazing. Think about this for a second. Your heart beats 60 to 100 times per minute (40 per minute if you’re an athlete in good shape). That’s every minute of every day, every day of every week, every week of every month, every month of every year, every year of your life. It must do that because your heart controls the blood flow and oxygenation that keeps your body alive — a very important function indeed.

But what of our brain?

Your Brain Is Amazing! Treat it right

Our brain also works like our heart 24-7 365 days a year. It too is always working when we’re awake, when we’re sleeping, and it takes care of us when we’re badly injured, in shock, or even when we’re in a coma. It seems to me that the brain and heart share the same importance when it comes to keeping us functioning. Neither could exist without the help of the other. Yet for all the advice we’re given on how to keep our heart healthy – how often do we get advice on how to keep our brain healthy? As an Executive Functioning and ADHD Coach who understands the importance of brain health for the successful functioning of my clients, I too wonder why that is.

So today I’m going to make a case for good brain health. After all, just like your heart and your computer, your brain needs rest, the right nutrition, enough exercise, and deep breathing for proper oxygen intake, and yes, a lot of positive thinking to support its critical tasks. I hope you will take this “to heart” and think of how you are caring or not caring enough for your most amazing brain that is capable of so much more than we currently understand.

Take Good Care of Your Brain

The eight ingredients for good brain health are:

  1. Get at least 7 hours of undisturbed sleep.
  2. To improve oxygen intake, exercise aerobically every day until you break a sweat.
  3. To combat shallow breathing, practice retraining yourself to breathe deeply from a full belly.
  4. Learn which foods are rich in antioxidants and minerals (like Omega 3 Fatty Acids) for good brain health.
  5. Close your eyes and take short resting periods for a few minutes throughout the day.
  6. Meditate at least once a day for a minimum of 15 minutes.
  7. Engage in practices like massage, yoga, tai chi, and others to better balance energy and thought waves.
  8. Be generous with your positive thoughts because they slow your heart rate, calm your mind, and nurture creative thinking and good problem-solving.

Sharing is caring!

Whoa this was great and I actually understood it lol. As a christian woman who raised a child with ADHD and fought a great fight without much strategy. With Not an understanding of his brain a lot was done wrong. I know I’m one of the parents who possess it and my other grown child I feel it was over looked, like mine was unintentionally as a child.
I am obsessed with the brain and helping especially African American christian women, wives and moms through the shame that comes with both having it an knowing or symptoms while raising a child with it understand themselves so they can feel more control over their lives.
I had no understanding of why my repetitive behavior existed even as a grown woman in addition to consequences I appeared to others to ignore. I was shameful until I began to ask for more help as I learned more so I could advocate for my child for what I wanted, he needed with knowledge I had. So I cannot wait to build my business and change others lives. I was married at that time and my husband never believed his child issues, always wanted to believe it was him with a rebellious on purpose disobedient spirit. I knew it was more. Working as a social worker assistant during this time I confided in my supervisor till this day I call my angel God put in place just for me. She helped me with preparation process and psper work of asking for an evaluation. The rest is history. I learned alot and understand why i worked so hard. Hyper focusing on whst i loved kept me drowned deep in my work. I hate seeing parents thinking they’re poor parents because of neurotypical ignorance. I love the brain life, the behaviors it is responsible for. It’s amazing. Sharing Biblical principals and other strategies to help women with ADHD, raising children with it or both that they have nothing to be ashamed about and use their voices and not be another best kept secret. Thank you for sharing.
