Since we now know that problems with executive functions originating in the prefrontal cortex area of the brain can be the result of ADHD as well as other causes, increasingly more and more people who need help are poised to receive assistance whether they have a diagnosis of ADHD or not. In other words, as long as someone has issues completing the necessary daily tasks of everyday life, including getting an education and being successfully employed, they will need professionally trained and qualified ADHD Coaches to help them navigate their lives and careers.
Those of us who have worked in the field of ADHD and executive functioning have known for years that it has never been enough to have a diagnosis, therapy, and or medication. These interventions do not — and cannot — teach the behaviors and strategies necessary for an effective life when you have executive functioning issues. But ADHD Coaches can because that is what they do. And let me remind the reader, therapists are not ADHD Coaches so keep that in mind when some of them claim to be.
Whether or not executive function Weakness is a disorder or a disability doesn’t matter when it comes to describing symptoms and getting the specific help needed to overcome them. This is true for most professionals who work with people who have these issues, including ADHD Coaches. However, it matters when it comes to getting the kind of accommodations in school, college, or work environments that help our clients with executive functioning weakness to successfully meet the expectations of the organization or institution.
Before deciding on whether a diagnosis is necessary or not, we might want to recommend our client checks out the accommodations available to them under certain guidelines. Although I am not a fan of labeling people “ADHD,” “disordered,” or “disabled”, I believe one must look to the help provided through the accommodations offered by the Americans with Disabilities Act before deciding.
